anatomy

Terminology follows Fine Woodworking's common parts (base/runway, ledge/platform, stop/fence) and Lee Valley's usage ("fence" for the adjustable angle stop, "track" for the plane path) [SB4][SB16].

lineage

Petroski lens — a dated failure statement, kept separate from the patent. Rogers's 1882 patent (US 264,766) claims a movable quadrant and related mechanism [SB33]. The failure statement comes from later advertising: circa-1900 Millers Falls/Langdon price-list copy, transcribed on DATAMP, says miter planers "as heretofore constructed, are open to serious complaint, on account of the tendency of the plane to 'jump' or leave the track, especially in planing hard moldings" [SB7]. The two are separate evidence with different provenance and dates; the advertisement is a manufacturer naming the problem its product addressed, not text from the patent.
