Story Stick

Identity

• Names: story stick (most common US/cabinetmaking term); storey pole / story pole (British and framing usage); storey rod; jury stick; scantling / scantillon (older terms, per the Oxford English Dictionary as cited by Wikipedia's "Storey pole" entry); "the rod" (live British/European cabinetmaking and timber-framing usage — a rod is a full-scale layout, and "rod layout" is the named technique). A cabinetmaking-specific full-sheet version is sometimes called a story board.
• Family / category: a non-graduated, full-scale reference/layout tool — a physical record of one specific project's actual dimensions and reference points, used to transfer measurements directly by holding the stick against the work, rather than reading a ruled scale and doing arithmetic.
• One-line: a length of wood (or a board) marked with a specific project's actual full-scale dimensions and reference points, used to transfer those measurements directly onto work — no ruler, no math, no re-reading a scale.
• Explicitly NOT: Tape Measure or a folding rule (both are graduated, reusable-across-projects, number-based instruments; a story stick carries no printed scale and is normally built for one project only); a scaled shop drawing or plan (a story stick/rod is full-scale, 1:1 — the entire reason it exists is to avoid the error a scaled drawing introduces when a craftsperson has to do arithmetic to convert a scale measurement into a real one); Dividers (dividers step off and compare a span geometrically but carry no written record of what that span is for later reference — a story stick is written memory, dividers are a live comparison tool).

How NOT to use it

• Not-for: reusing one project's story stick on a different project without retiring or planing it clean — documented directly as a real, named failure mode: "a story pole made for a shed with 8-foot walls cannot be 'repurposed' for a cabin with 9-foot walls by simply adding more marks. Overlapping marks on a single pole lead to confusion and mistakes" [ecosnippets.com, LOW-MEDIUM, single source — treated as a plausible, internally consistent claim pending stronger corroboration, not settled fact]. Communicating a dimension to a remote party who has no physical access to the stick — a reasoned inference from the tool's own non-numeric nature, not independently sourced as a named warning; flagged honestly rather than dressed up as documented.
• Dangerous: genuinely thin, reported honestly rather than invented. No source found this run documents a story-stick-specific injury, and this is consistent with the tool's own low-force, low-mechanism nature — it is a marked stick, not a bladed or powered tool. The only real, physically grounded hazard is generic and secondhand: a rough-cut stick can splinter, and a marking knife or scratch awl used to score a stick carries the same low-grade cut/puncture risk any hand-marking tool carries — general wood-splinter and hand-tool-marking hazard data exists, but nothing found this run ties it specifically to story sticks. Stated plainly: this entry's DANGEROUS class is close to nil, a genuinely searched and confirmed absence, not a gap papered over with invented risk.
• Damaging: using the wrong reference point, or losing track of which mark on a densely-marked stick is which — the entire reason labeling, notching, and color-coding conventions exist (see Anatomy). Pencil-line thickness introducing real error — a standard carpenter's pencil line can run nearly 1/16" wide, and marking consistently on one side of the line (or switching to a knife line for critical work) is the documented fix, the same precision issue this corpus's Tape Measure entry raises from its own side [ecosnippets.com, LOW-MEDIUM, consistent with the broader corpus pattern]. Letting the stick warp or get damaged mid-project, losing the master reference — a bowed stick reads shorter than its true straight-line distance, and storing it flat, dry, and sealed is the named countermeasure [ecosnippets.com, LOW-MEDIUM, single source, physically plausible but not independently corroborated]. Transcribing a story stick's marks onto a numeric tape-measure record and back, reintroducing exactly the cumulative-reading error the tool exists to avoid — a direct corollary of the [T53]-documented tape-measure cumulative-error mechanism already in this corpus's Tape Measure entry.
• Beginner-trap: treating a story stick as "to scale" and measuring it with a ruler instead of using it as a direct witness-mark transfer tool — the core beginner misunderstanding named across trade sourcing, framed directly as: a story stick should be thought of "not as a ruler, but as the story of your project written on a piece of wood" [WebSearch synthesis drawing on Canadian Woodworking and related trade sourcing — the specific article hosting this exact phrasing could not be independently re-fetched this run, flagged as search-summary-only]. Building the story stick off tape-measure numbers instead of directly against the actual work — defeats the tool's entire purpose, turning it into a second, less legible tape measure; a direct corollary of the "not to scale" trap rather than independently sourced as its own named warning. Losing track of orientation — top/bottom, front/back — on a stick with multiple faces or many marks, documented directly: "a story pole usually has a 'top' and a 'bottom,' and if you accidentally use the pole upside down, your layout will be a disaster" [ecosnippets.com, LOW-MEDIUM, single source].
• Lineage-misuse: treating a story stick like a scaled shop drawing — it is not scaled, it is a 1:1 point-transfer object, and this distinction is implicit across every practitioner source and explicit in the British "rod" tradition's own framing (a rod is a full-scale drawing precisely because a scaled drawing can't be worked from directly with the same error-freedom). Confusing a cabinetmaker's story board with a timber framer's story pole — different reference conventions (a cabinet story stick tracks carcase/drawer/shelf points against a single-piece datum; a framing story pole tracks storey-height points — sill, header, joist — against a whole-building floor datum); this is a cross-source inference from how the two trades' own sourcing frames each tool, not a single source naming it explicitly as a "trap." The Moulding Plane entry's own V-groove-plane citation, evaluated directly and independently this run: a genuine, useful functional metaphor (both serve as "a reference for a repeated operation"), but not a real mechanical or lineage cousin — a V-groove is a cut registered in the workpiece itself guiding a following cutting tool; a story stick is an external, reusable, non-cutting information object. Stated plainly so a future entry doesn't overstate the kinship.

Correct use

• Genuinely good at: eliminating cumulative measurement error across many repeated cuts — quantified directly by a named professional: "if each rise is off just 1/16 in. … the accumulated error could be as much as an inch on a typical staircase" [Lon Schleining, Fine Homebuilding #142, direct fetch, HIGH]. Working around actual, out-of-level or out-of-square site conditions rather than a nominal plan dimension — Schleining's own worked stair example depends on exactly this, since varying finish-floor and tread thicknesses "conspire against a plumb, level staircase." Transferring a shape or a full set of reference points directly, with no intermediate arithmetic. Fast checking of many parts against one master reference — Schleining states laying out a stair story pole takes about 15 minutes, after which the builder can frame with confidence.
• How to use it well (short version — the workbench holds the full operational sequence): establish a single datum/zero point (commonly the top of the subfloor) and measure every other mark from that one line, never from mark to mark — a "chain of custody" discipline named across multiple sources, though most directly at LOW-MEDIUM confidence via a single trade-content article, with general corroboration from named forum practitioners. Lock in material choices (flooring or tread thickness, for instance) before building the stick — a later change to finish-material thickness can force a costly rebuild once the structure is already framed to the pole, a direct, named-professional warning specific to stairs [Schleining, direct fetch, HIGH]. Index the stick consistently — same end, same edge, flush every time — the single highest-leverage discipline named across sources for keeping story-stick accuracy real rather than nominal.

✦ Matching

• Does: transfers · references · marks · checks-against — a project's own actual dimensions and reference points, without an intermediate number.
• Suits: repetitive cabinetry and casework with multiple identical parts (drawer fronts, shelf pins, face-frame members); kitchen cabinet runs laid out wall-to-wall on paired sticks; staircase layout, where it is the named professional-standard tool for rise consistency and a genuine safety item, not just a convenience; timber-frame/post-and-beam floor and wall layout (window/door rough-opening heights, joist and girt locations); window/door rough openings generally; masonry course-height layout. Coopering/curved work is honestly thin — no direct sourcing found this run ties a classic story stick to barrel-stave layout specifically; flagged as a real gap rather than a confirmed absence.
• Kit-fit: pairs with a pencil or marking knife (the primary marking instruments); pairs with Dividers for stepping off equal intervals from a story-stick reference — cross-referenced directly against this corpus's own Dividers entry, which recommends a story stick specifically for "an inaccessible or obstructed span" a divider's own straight points can't reach. Substitutes for a Tape Measure on repeated, identical-part layout, where a story stick removes the tape's re-reading error at every single cut — this is exactly the tradeoff this corpus's own Tape Measure entry already documents from the tape's side. Cannot replace a tape measure for a one-off, non-repeated measurement, or for communicating a dimension to a remote party (a supplier, a second crew, anyone without physical access to the stick itself) — a reasoned extension of the tool's own non-numeric nature rather than a claim independently found stated this way in a single named source, flagged as inference. Not reusable across projects — a pole built for one project's dimensions is not safely "extended" with more marks for a different project (see Misuse below).
• Not-for (project-keyed): do not reach for this to communicate a dimension to someone without physical access to the stick; do not reach for a used project's stick on a new, different project without retiring or planing it clean first.
• Access: genuinely beginner-accessible — several sources frame it as more error-resistant than reading a tape measure correctly, since it sidesteps parallax error, hook-slop confusion, and fraction misreading entirely, all of which this corpus's own Tape Measure entry documents from the tape's own side. One named practitioner states directly that "unskilled labor can successfully use the method even if the ability to read a tape measure is lacking" [Hank Metz, direct fetch, MEDIUM — single-source but consistent with independent corroboration on the tape-measure side].
• Revival: a maker reaching for a story stick over a tape measure and a cut list is trading a portable numeric record for direct, error-resistant physical transfer — most valuable exactly where repetition and precision both matter (stairs, cabinet runs, matched components) and least valuable for a single quick cut. A genuinely low-tech, low-cost, high-leverage technique worth reviving specifically because it requires no equipment beyond a scrap stick and a pencil.

Anatomy

• Stick/board material. A straight-grained 1×2 or 1×4 for site/framing work; 1/4"–3/8" plywood or solid stock (birch, maple, MDF) for shop/cabinetmaking sticks, chosen specifically for a smooth, light, hard surface that takes a clean pencil mark and sands or planes clean for reuse [Fine Homebuilding forum, named posters Eric Anderson/nikkiwood/eddiefromaustralia, 2005, direct fetch; Woodcraft, "Story Stick," recommending 1-1/2"–2" wide light-colored plywood specifically so marks show and erase cleanly, direct fetch]. A full sheet-good "story board" is used for tracing irregular shapes via the related ticking stick technique.
• Marking convention. Pencil tick marks are standard. A "V" or crow's-foot mark (rather than a single line) is used because a V's apex is a single unambiguous point, where a line has an interpretable near-edge/far-edge — a real, sourced precision technique, though from a single lower-confidence trade-content source rather than a named professional, flagged accordingly [ecosnippets.com, "Using Story Poles For Accurate Homestead Building" — LOW-MEDIUM, reads as SEO/content-farm material, plausible and internally consistent with stronger sources but not independently corroborated by a named practitioner]. A marking knife or scratch awl is the higher-precision alternative to pencil for a scored line a saw or chisel can register against directly [same source, LOW-MEDIUM].
• Labeling multiple reference points on one stick. Small written notations beside each mark ("Top of Header," "Window Sill") [Woodcraft, direct fetch]; a physical notch cut into the stick's edge at a reference point, so the notch itself becomes part of every future line drawn from it [Fine Woodworking forum, Keith Newton, 2005, direct fetch]; color-coding by category — one named practitioner documents red for fronts, green for frames, blue for drawer boxes [Hank Metz, direct fetch, single-source, corroborated only in general form (color-per-category) elsewhere].
• A sourced taxonomy of names by function. One practitioner source distinguishes story rods (recording a whole space — a kitchen, a hall — worked in pairs, carrying master window/door/plumbing/electrical layout), story sticks (recording the individual elements the rods call for, carrying all three dimensions in detail for one piece), and detail sticks (transferring one repeated component, such as matching drawer fronts, off the story stick) [Hank Metz, direct fetch — a single-source taxonomy at this granularity, not independently corroborated elsewhere, carried as a useful but not universally-confirmed convention].
• Orientation marking. A story pole normally has a top and a bottom; using it upside down ruins the layout, so practitioners mark a large arrow and "UP" on the stick [ecosnippets.com, LOW-MEDIUM — consistent with the independently-documented general orientation-error class under Misuse — beginner-trap below].

Variations (living)

• Story pole (timber framing / house framing) — a length of narrow board, typically cut to one storey's height, marked from a floor datum for window sill/head heights, door heights, joist levels, and similar whole-building reference points; also used in remodeling to match new siding coursing to existing coursing [Wikipedia/HandWiki, "Storey pole," direct fetch of full mirrored text, citing the OED, Carlsen's Woodworking FAQ (2012), Nash's Do-it-yourself Housebuilding (1995), The Builder and Wood-Worker (1884), and Old House Journal (Leeke, 1994) — HIGH].
• Story stick / story board (cabinetmaking) — a stick or full sheet marking one case piece's carcase height, drawer openings, and shelf positions, keeping repeated cuts identical across a project [Fine Homebuilding, "Making a Story Stick," Sven Hanson, direct fetch, HIGH — named cabinetmaker, Marietta GA]. A whole kitchen wall run of cabinets can be laid out on paired sticks held end to end [Woodcraft, direct fetch].
• The rod (traditional/British joinery) — a more formal full-scale layout: three separate 1:1 drawings (plan, front elevation, side elevation) on one board, historically ~10mm (3/8") MDF, roughly 200mm (8") wide, from which components are offered up directly rather than measured [Fine Woodworking forum, eddiefromaustralia, quoting a period how-to from a named practitioner ("Sgian Dubh") describing standard trade practice — direct fetch, MEDIUM-HIGH]. Described independently as central to pre-CAD professional cabinetmaking shops.
• Moulding loft / lofting (shipbuilding, and by extension large timber-frame work) — a large flat floor on which a ship's lines were drawn full-size to check fairness before construction, from which loftsmen produced wooden moulds, templates, battens, and cutting sketches. Treated in this entry as a related but distinct full-scale technique — a floor-scale drawing, not a portable stick (see Lineage).
• Masonry/bricklaying story pole ("gauge rod") — a pole marked at course-height intervals (commonly every 3/8", matching a standard mortar-joint thickness) used to plan and check course heights, window/door reveals, and plumb through a wall's construction. A real, current, commercially distinct product: Superior Mason's "Story-Rite" system is a self-supporting story-pole attachment with adjustable braces that set plumb and preset course heights [superiormason.com, direct fetch, HIGH for product existence]. A genuine, directly-fetched utility patent exists for this exact class of tool: US 2006/0059856A1, "Masonry story pole with adjustable braces," describing a pole with a bottom support bracket, a working-area bracket, and rotatable corner-positioning braces.
• The ticking stick (a close cousin, for irregular/curved shapes) — a board or story-board edge used to trace an irregular contour (a curved wall, an out-of-square corner) by "ticking" a series of reference points along it, then reproducing the shape off-site. A genuinely distinct technique from a straight-dimension story stick, though closely related in principle (a physical, non-arithmetic record of an actual as-built condition) [Home Fixated, "How To Use A Ticking Stick," direct fetch, MEDIUM].

Trades

• Timber framing / house framing — storey height, window/door rough-opening, and joist-level layout; the formalized Square Rule/Scribe Rule/Mill Rule systems.
• Cabinetmaking and furniture making — "rod layout," case dimensions, drawer/shelf positions, and (in the British/European tradition) the formal three-view "Rod" produced before any cutting begins.
• Stair building — a trade with a uniquely tight, safety-relevant story-pole discipline (see Human side and Correct use).
• Masonry/bricklaying — course-height gauge rods, now a real patented, commercially manufactured product class distinct from a shop-made wooden stick.
• Shipbuilding — the related, larger-scale mould-loft/lofting tradition.
• General remodeling — matching new work (siding coursing, trim runs) to existing as-built conditions rather than a nominal plan dimension.

Lineage

• Ancestor — the medieval masons' tracing floor. A full-scale layout practice: master masons drew moulding profiles, window tracery, and vaulting designs at 1:1 scale directly onto a plaster floor, re-plastering and re-drawing as needed. Two such floors survive in England and are directly, academically documented: York Minster's Mason's Loft floor (gypsum plaster, built roughly with the Minster's 1290s vestibule, carrying identifiable full-scale setting-out for the Lady Chapel aisle windows built 1361–1373, and later tracery matched to St Michael-le-Belfrey's 1525–1537 rebuilding) [University of York, "The plaster floor," citing John Harvey's 1968/1977 published identification of the specific drawings]; and Wells Cathedral's 15th-century tracing floor in the roof space above the north porch, recently surveyed by an academic photogrammetry/laser-scanning project [tracingthepast.org.uk, presenting a peer-reviewed eCAADe 2020 conference paper]. The story stick is best understood as a portable, miniaturized descendant of this same principle — full-scale, non-numerical reference — though no source found this run states that ancestry relationship as a documented historical fact rather than a structural analogy; carried here as Haft's own reasoned framing, flagged accordingly.
• A deeper, independently-cited ancestor — Egyptian "boning rods." Wikipedia's "Storey pole" article states there is evidence of boning-rods used in constructing the Great Pyramid as counterparts of modern storey poles, citing a peer-reviewed source: Martin Isler, "Concerning the Concave Faces on the Great Pyramid," Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt 20 (1983): 27–32. The citation is real and the journal is peer-reviewed; the original article itself was not independently fetched and read this run, so the specific "boning rod = story-pole equivalent" framing is carried at reduced confidence, as Wikipedia's own gloss rather than a directly verified reading.
• Contemporary relative, not a lineal ancestor — the shipbuilding mould loft. A related full-scale layout practice at a larger scale: a dedicated loft floor on which a ship's hull lines were drawn at 1:1 to check fairness, from which wooden moulds and templates were cut. Institutionally dated to 18th-century European yards (Chatham Dockyard's dedicated loft building, 1753–1755), with looser claims of 13th–14th century Mediterranean roots that are thinner-sourced. CAD superseded manual lofting from the early 1970s. This entry treats lofting as a related but distinct technique — a floor-scale drawing, not a portable stick — rather than simply a larger story stick; no source found this run documents a direct mechanical or lineal connection between the two, only a shared underlying principle (full-scale, non-arithmetic reference).
• Contemporaries (tools solving an adjacent problem differently): Tape Measure — this corpus's own Tape Measure entry already states the tradeoff directly, citing Fine Woodworking's "Story Sticks Leave Little Room for Error": a tape measure substitutes for a story stick on one-off or non-critical measurements but not on repeat-critical joinery, where cumulative re-reading error compounds. Dividers — this corpus's own Dividers entry notes a story stick as the right tool where "an inaccessible or obstructed span may require another gauge or a story stick," a genuinely different job (a two-point geometric transfer vs. a full multi-dimension written record). Scale/CAD drawings — the modern digital contemporary and, per a Popular Woodworking source, effectively the tool's living successor for pattern-based work (see Descendants below).
• Descendants — not replaced, absorbed. Popular Woodworking states plainly that CNC-machined patterns are "the ultimate story sticks," carrying a piece's name, pattern, sequence, and dimensions in one physical object — the same job description as a shop-made story stick, executed digitally [Popular Woodworking, "Getting Started with CNC Patterns" — trade press, via search synthesis, not independently full-text fetched this run].
• A genuine mechanized descendant — the masonry gauge rod / story pole. A distinct, commercially manufactured, patented product class: a course-height reference pole for bricklaying, sometimes fitted with adjustable braces to self-support against a rising wall. US Patent 2006/0059856A1, "Masonry story pole with adjustable braces" (filed 2004, building on a prior US 6,231,059 patent), directly fetched and read — describes a pole with a bottom support bracket, a working-area bracket, and rotatable corner-positioning braces. A live commercial product in this exact class (Superior Mason's "Story-Rite" system) was directly confirmed. This is the strongest evidence in the whole entry that "story stick"-class tools have crossed from folk technique into engineered, patented hardware in at least one trade.
• A related but mechanically distinct entry already in this corpus, evaluated directly: Moulding Plane's own text calls the V-groove moulding plane "the closest sourced analogue to a 'story stick' step inside the cutting sequence itself," while explicitly flagging it as "distinct from a layout story stick." Independent judgment on this run agrees with that entry's own hedge: a V-groove is a physical guide cut in the workpiece that registers a following cutting tool, while a story stick is an external, reusable, non-cutting information-carrying object. Different mechanism, different object class, no traceable shared lineage or patent connection — a loose functional metaphor (both function as "a reference for a repeated operation"), not a genuine cousin. Stated here explicitly so a future entry doesn't treat it as more than that.
• An honest gap, not a confirmed absence — Japanese carpentry. Japanese joinery has a well-documented full-scale, non-arithmetic layout tradition built around the sashigane (a carpenter's square with proportional/diagonal scales on its back face) and the sumitsubo (ink-line marking tool). This is a related philosophy — geometric ratio over arithmetic — but no source found this run directly names a Japanese story-stick-equivalent artifact or draws the connection explicitly. Flagged as a real gap for a future pass, not asserted.

History

• No single inventor — stated as fact by multiple sources, not a hedge. Every source consulted this run treats the story stick as an ancient, folk-transmitted, parallel-invented technique that predates the graduated folding rule. Jim Tolpin, writing in Fine Woodworking, recounts an elderly cabinetmaker telling him "the kitchen was on the sticks, just like the great pyramid of Giza was on a cubit stick," and states that graduated rules "didn't even exist until the beginning of the last century. Prior to then, all measurement and layout work was done by marking up straight sticks or rods" [Fine Woodworking #105, 1994, "Story Poles and How to Use Them," Jim Tolpin — the direct article page could not be re-fetched this run due to a session-level fetch fault; the quote is carried via WebSearch's own summary, flagged accordingly rather than presented as independently verified against the primary text]. A real, sourced correction, not a dismissal (Run 519, 2026-08-23): Wooden Folding Rule (Two-Foot Rule)'s own entry directly verified a Science Museum Group object dating a hinged, folding, graduated rule to 1720–1730, and independently corroborated graduated (sliding-form) two-foot rules in documented English trade use from the 1670s–80s (Moxon; Coggeshall) — roughly 170–280 years before Tolpin's "beginning of the last century." Tolpin's cabinetmaker was very likely speaking to when graduated rules came to dominate ordinary trade practice over stick/rod layout, not to when they first existed; the stronger, museum-dated claim is carried forward here rather than the folk-sourced one. This corpus should not search for or assign an inventor to this tool — the absence of one is itself the finding, in direct contrast to entries like Tape Measure or Moulding Plane, which carry real named-inventor patent chains.
• Earliest verifiable trace — Egyptian boning rods, Great Pyramid construction, c. 2600 BCE, per the Isler 1983 peer-reviewed citation discussed under Lineage above (carried at reduced confidence pending an independent read of the original article).
• Earliest directly-confirmed physical/architectural evidence — English cathedral tracing floors, 13th–15th century. York Minster (floor built with the c.1290s vestibule) and Wells Cathedral (15th century) both directly confirmed via academic/institutional sources (see Lineage and Proof of Existence).
• The failure it fixes — directly and specifically sourced from three named practitioners, not inferred by Haft. (1) Cumulative stepping error: Jed Dixon, a professional stair builder, writing in THISisCarpentry: laying out a stair by stepping off risers with a framing square and gauge stops risks being "off by more than 1/2 in. when you get to the last rise" by the time the error compounds across many repeated steps — his entire story-pole technique for stairs exists to prevent this [THISisCarpentry, "Story Poles for Stairs," Jed Dixon, 2008 — the direct article could not be re-fetched this run, carried via WebSearch summary]. (2) Tape-misreading error: Carl Duguay, Canadian Woodworking's senior editor, directly: "How many of us have measured something at 33-1/4″ as an example, and then marked the board to be cut at 32-3/4″ just by looking at the tape from the other side? If you eliminate the need to measure, then naturally, you reduce the potential for measurement related errors" [Canadian Woodworking, "Story sticks," Carl Duguay — direct fetch]. (3) Arithmetic/transcription error: Steve Shanesy, former Popular Woodworking editor, describes rod layout as existing specifically "to minimize math errors that can creep into a project" from repeated fraction arithmetic across a cutting list [Popular Woodworking, "Cabinet Layout Method Reduces Errors," Steve Shanesy — direct fetch]. A fourth, related mechanism — closing the gap between a drawn, nominal dimension and a shop's actual, out-of-level/out-of-square built reality — is directly evidenced by stair-builder Lon Schleining's own worked example: varying finish-floor and tread thicknesses "conspire against a plumb, level staircase," and his story pole is built against the real site conditions, not the architect's drawing [Fine Homebuilding #142, 2001, "Using a Story Pole to Lay Out Stairs," Lon Schleining — direct fetch].
• Petroski's "form follows failure" lens, applied honestly. No source found this run applies the Petroski framework to the story stick by name — this is Haft's own interpretive lens, not a sourced claim, and is stated as such rather than dressed up as scholarship. The underlying failure-and-fix logic itself (cumulative stepping error, tape-misreading error, arithmetic error, nominal-vs-actual mismatch) is directly and specifically sourced from three named practitioners, exactly as above.
• A genuine current descendant that fixes the same failure digitally: see Descendants above — CNC patterns inherit the story stick's core job (a physical, self-contained, error-resistant reference) rather than eliminating the need for one.
• A named, unverified fringe claim, flagged rather than silently dropped: a self-identified author (James Mitchell, promoting his own forthcoming books on log building and timber framing) asserts in a comment thread that a "Center Rule" tradition traces to Roman Opus Craticum and the Chinese Yingzao Fashi (a 1103 CE building-standards text), older than the layout systems discussed by the article he's commenting on. This is a self-interested, uncorroborated claim from a single comment-thread source — carried here as a lead for a future pass, not as fact [Timber Frame HQ comment thread — LOW confidence, not adopted].

Human side

• Trades and traditions, each independently sourced. Timber framing — "the rod," and the formalized Square Rule/Scribe Rule/Mill Rule layout systems, each depending on rod- or story-pole-like references [Timber Frame HQ, "Timber Frame Layout Rules," Brice Cochran — named practitioner, trade blog with a substantive practitioner comment thread]. Stair building — a trade with its own tight, safety-driven story-pole discipline (see Misuse — dangerous, below). Cabinetmaking/furniture making — "rod layout" [Popular Woodworking, Shanesy]; the full-scale "Rod" practice every student at Rowden Atelier (a working UK fine-furniture school) is required to produce before building [Rowden Atelier, "Rods… What's a rod?" Lakshmi Bhaskaran, 2017 — named practitioner]. House framing, siding, and remodeling — matching new siding coursing to existing coursing is named directly as a story-pole use case [Wikipedia/HandWiki "Storey pole," citing Old House Journal (Leeke, 1994)]. Masonry/bricklaying — course-height layout via a gauge rod, now a real commercial product category (see Lineage). Shipbuilding lofting — a related, larger-scale full-floor version of the same underlying principle.
• Named practitioners with real texture. Jim Tolpin (Fine Woodworking) — the "Gentleman Jim" anecdote: an elderly cabinetmaker who reportedly built an entire custom kitchen "on the sticks" with just a pencil and three long sticks, no tape measure at all — genuinely good, quotable human-side texture (carried via search-summary; the primary article itself could not be re-fetched this run, flagged above). Jed Dixon — professional stair and stair-parts builder and restorer, New England, with a full worked example and named tools. Carl Duguay — Canadian Woodworking senior editor and Victoria, BC furniture maker, with a full worked how-to built around a named specific project (a 29" shop stool) [direct fetch]. Steve Shanesy — former Popular Woodworking publisher/editor, describing rod layout as a technique he learned "years ago, before computer assisted drawing programs" and still uses for complex kitchen projects [direct fetch]. Lon Schleining — professional stairbuilder, Fine Homebuilding #142 (2001), a full first-person professional account with real stakes (see Misuse — dangerous) [direct fetch]. Lakshmi Bhaskaran — Rowden Atelier alum and co-founder of Bark Furniture (Cornwall), describing the school's mandatory "Rod" practice and a real, non-obvious secondary benefit: checking a design's proportions full-scale before building ("a piece just looks too... bulky or the legs look spindly when you look down on them"), a benefit beyond pure dimensional accuracy [direct fetch]. Hank Metz — a named practitioner whose personal page lays out a detailed rod/stick/detail-stick taxonomy and a color-coding convention (red for fronts, green for frames, blue for drawer boxes) — a single-source but internally rich account [direct fetch, MEDIUM].
• Forums — real, existence-confirmed, only partially retrievable this run. A 2005 Fine Woodworking forum thread with several named posters (Eric Anderson, Keith Newton, nikkiwood, eddiefromaustralia, Dan Kornfeld) discussing real shop construction details — separate sticks for height/length/depth, "pinch sticks" for captured/built-in dimensions between two walls, and a physical notch cut into a stick's edge as a reference mark — was directly fetched and is genuinely rich, multi-poster-corroborated shop texture [direct fetch, MEDIUM-HIGH]. Sawmill Creek and LumberJocks threads on the same topic were confirmed to exist by title (a 2009 "Tutorial for Making Story Stick," a "Woodpecker's Newest Tool — Story Stick Pro 96" commercial-product discussion, a documented shop-scrap-stick project) but not independently fetched and read in full this run — flagged as titles/gist confirmed, not verbatim-verified. WoodNet and r/woodworking searches returned no independently retrievable content this run — an honest access gap, not a confirmed absence of material.
• A living commercial market, not just an improvised shop trick. Woodpeckers sells a branded "Story Stick Pro" (48"/96" versions); Rockler sells a Story Stick Kit; Lee Valley sells hardware specifically for building custom story sticks — a real, current signal this remains a bought, branded product in active trade use, not purely a nostalgic or DIY-only technique [manufacturer/retailer product pages, direct fetch for existence, not independently cross-checked for sales volume].

Proof of existence

• Great Pyramid "boning rods" (Egypt, c. 2600 BCE) — the earliest plausible lead, peer-reviewed but not independently re-verified: Martin Isler, "Concerning the Concave Faces on the Great Pyramid," Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt 20 (1983): 27–32, cited by Wikipedia's "Storey pole" article as evidence of boning-rods used in pyramid construction as counterparts of modern storey poles. The citation's existence and peer-reviewed status are confirmed; the underlying characterization is Wikipedia's own gloss on the article, not an independently verified reading of Isler's text.
• York Minster tracing floor — a gypsum-plaster floor in the Minster's Vestibule/Masons' Loft (built with the c.1290s vestibule), carrying identifiable full-scale setting-out for the Lady Chapel aisle windows (built 1361–1373) and later tracery matched to St Michael-le-Belfyry's 1525–1537 rebuilding, per John Harvey's published identification (1968, 1977). One of only two such surviving floors in England [University of York, "The plaster floor," direct fetch of full page, HIGH — academic/institutional].
• Wells Cathedral tracing floor — a 15th-century plaster tracing floor in the roof space above the north porch, described as "an extremely rare survival," recently digitally surveyed via photogrammetry, reflectance transformation imaging, and laser scanning under a funded academic project, presented in a peer-reviewed eCAADe 2020 conference paper [tracingthepast.org.uk, direct fetch of the project's abstract and paper link, HIGH — academic/institutional; the underlying conference paper itself not independently fetched this run].
• Patents. No patent exists for a plain wooden story stick — expected, and consistent with the entry's own History section: this is a folk-transmitted technique, too simple and too old to be patentable. Two genuine adjacent-category patents were directly fetched and read in full: US 2006/0059856A1, "Masonry story pole with adjustable braces" (a mechanized, braced version of the masonry gauge rod, building on a prior US 6,231,059 patent); and US 9,435,130 / US 2016/0201344, "Layout Tool" (Joseph Briganti, JB Builders LLC, filed 2015) — a pre-marked, angled framing layout tool for simultaneously marking studs on headers and footers, whose own background section frames itself as solving the same "human error in repeated marking" problem a story stick solves. That patent's own "Review of Related Technology" section names four further, earlier layout-tool patents (US 6,895,683; US 6,775,916; US 5,960,554, a stud-layout template; US 2006/0174500, a framing square with a centering window) as prior art — none independently re-fetched this run, carried at MEDIUM via the citing patent's own description.
• Museum/collection objects — a genuine, honest gap. No cataloged Smithsonian, Museum of English Rural Life, or Mystic Seaport object specifically titled or described as a "story stick" or "story pole" was found this run despite direct, repeated searching of all three. This reads as a genuine absence in what's indexed and searchable, not a confirmed absence in the collections themselves — an ordinary shop-made stick is unlikely to be accessioned as a distinct museum object the way a patented, manufactured tool would be, which is itself a useful, honest observation for this entry rather than a failure to find something that exists.
• Dated first-person accounts. A 2005 Fine Woodworking forum thread with several named posters discussing real shop construction details, directly fetched; Sven Hanson (named cabinetmaker, Marietta GA) demonstrating his own technique on video, Fine Homebuilding, 2006, directly fetched; Lon Schleining (named professional stairbuilder) writing in first-person professional voice, Fine Homebuilding #142, 2001, directly fetched.
