Petroski lens — form follows failure, with the arithmetic stated. The scrub's anatomy answers one mechanical problem: how to take a very deep cut without the plane becoming unusable. For a circular-arc edge, the sagitta (centre projection of the curve over a chord of width w at radius R) is R − √(R² − (w/2)²). At R = 3 in this gives about 0.066 in for a 1¼ in chord, 0.095 in for 1½ in, and 0.172 in for 2 in (recomputed in this pass; the reviewer gives the same values). So a narrower cutter at the same radius makes a less extreme full-chord engagement, which is the sound qualitative point of the forum discussion [SP10]. Two cautions: the original entry's "about 1/16 in" and "roughly ⅛ in" came from a forum calculation, not a maker or engineering source, and are not accurate across the stated widths; and normal scrub use engages only a portion of the curved edge, so full-chord sagitta is not routine shaving thickness [SP10 for the forum discussion].
