Pry Bar (Wrecking Bar)

Identity

• Names: "Pry bar" is the umbrella term for this entry. "Crowbar," "wrecking bar," "flat bar," "pinch bar," "connecting or fit-up bar" and "rolling-head bar" overlap regionally but often signal different forms; select by the actual geometry and the maker's intended use, not by name (see Lineage and Variations). "Wrecking bar" is a heavy-demolition subset or overlapping trade name, not an exact synonym in every catalogue. WONDER BAR® is a registered Stanley mark (Reg. No. 1,494,846, filed 1987-11-23, held by Stanley Logistics, L.L.C. per the original entry's trademark record) and is also used informally by some tradespeople for similar flat bars. Treat the capitalised name as a brand unless discussing documented colloquial usage. "Jimmy bar" appears in casual usage but could not be sourced and is flagged unverified.
• Family / category: leverage and demolition hand tools: a hardened steel bar, straight or curved, shaped at one or both ends into a wedge, hook or slotted claw, used to apply mechanical leverage. Most pry bars work by wedging and levering rather than by controlled chip-cutting.
• One-line: a flat, offset or curved steel bar that turns arm force into a lever's mechanical advantage, for prying, splitting, lifting and nail extraction. Its beveled ends are wedges first, but makers also describe them as cutting or sharp edges (see Anatomy and How NOT to use it).
• Explicitly NOT: a woodworking chisel (its ends may be beveled or edged, but it is not a controlled chip-cutting tool; see Lineage's cross-link to Ripping Chisel, which names this tool as its "later functional successor"); a cat's paw / nail puller (a smaller, purpose-built nail-extraction tool); a Halligan bar (a firefighting-specific forcible-entry tool with its own geometry, treated under Human side as a separate cousin); a come-along (a winching tool, not a direct-lever prying tool); a hammer (do not use the bar to strike work).

How NOT to use it

• Not-for: cutting or chiseling (use a chisel or Ripping Chisel); sustained heavy-load lifting or support in place of a proper jack, crib or block; prying near live electrical or gas lines without confirmed clearance (prudent general caution, not a pry-bar-specific sourced warning); using the bar as a standing support under a raised load.
• Dangerous:
  • Where the hazard comes from. A loaded bar, fastener, workpiece or displaced object may release elastic or gravitational energy suddenly if the tip slips, the material breaks, or the fulcrum moves. Sudden release also occurs when a currently flexed tool or workpiece unloads. This is not stored energy left in a bar from a previous use: a permanently bent bar, once unloaded, is not a reservoir waiting to release the prior load. A visibly bent, cracked, chipped or mushroomed bar is unsafe because its integrity and geometry are compromised, and it must be retired.
  • Position and footing. Keep hands, face and body out of pinch and recoil paths. Use stable footing and a sound fulcrum, and prefer controlled force over jerking.
  • Supporting loads. Support any raised load independently, with blocks, cribbing or a jack, before placing any body part beneath or between parts. A bar is for positioning or lifting only while force is controlled. Never use it as a standing support.
  • Inspect before use; retire at the first sign. Inspect tip, shaft and any handle. Retire a bar at the first sign of bending, cracking, chipping, mushrooming, a damaged tip, or a loose or damaged handle. Do not field-straighten, weld, reheat or grind a bar unless the manufacturer authorises a procedure. Per the reviewer's reading, Mayhew's safety guidance supports eye protection, correct sizing, no cheater bar, inspection of tips and shafts, and discontinuing use for cracking, chipping, mushrooming or bending [manual, relayed]; per the reviewer, the Ajax safety card warns never to use a cheater extension on any pry bar and to stop when a bar starts to bend [manual, relayed].
  • Never add a pipe or improvised extension (cheater). No cheater pipe on any pry bar.
  • Eyes and bystanders. Wear approved eye protection. Prised material, fasteners and damaged tool edges can become projectiles; protect or exclude bystanders.
  • Electrical and site hazards. A comfort, plastic or vinyl grip is not electrical insulation. Before demolition, identify and control electrical, gas, water, structural-instability, dust, lead, asbestos, sharp-edge and falling-material hazards appropriate to the site.
  • Striking. Do not strike any pry bar unless the exact surface is designed and marked for striking by its maker, with the hammer and technique the maker specifies. General pry-bar safety guidance says not to strike ordinary pry bars, because hammering a nonstruck bar, claw, side, plastic or composite handle can chip steel, shatter a handle, produce a glancing blow, or launch debris. Do not generalise from a strike-cap model to all bars.
  • Standards. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.301 requires that unsafe hand tools not be issued or used; it is not pry-bar-specific operating guidance. Per the reviewer, ASME B107.410-2018 (R2023) now includes the former B107.52 nail-puller and pry-bar requirements, but the free page does not show the clauses, so no clause text is quoted [manual, relayed].
  • Source handling. The Argo Group safety talk (pry bars) is secondary training material listing strains, lacerations, fractures and unbalanced body position among hazards. Its exact wording about sudden energy release was not checked, and the "stored energy from a prior bend" framing is not attributed to it here. A circulated "1 in 4 hand-tool injuries / about 28,750 emergency visits" statistic traces only to a commercial retail blog, not to CPSC or NEISS, and is not carried as fact. No pry-bar-isolated injury figure was obtained; that is a research gap, not a finding that the hazard is small.
• Damaging:
  • Edges. The beveled or claw ends can scrape, sever fasteners on some designs, and mar finishes. A rounded or chipped tip slips; "nothing to sharpen" is not a license to keep using a damaged tip. Follow the maker's repair and retirement rules.
  • Soft versus hard steel. A trade-distributor buying guide (Tenaquip) states that steel too soft stays bent after a heavy pull, while steel too hard becomes brittle and can snap, sending shards flying; a well-made bar bends gradually as a warning.
  • Surfaces and lumber. Skipping the block or shim step marks the work. Splitting salvageable lumber by prying without a proper fulcrum is the failure the two patents were written against.
• Beginner-trap: an unstable fulcrum is the commonest way a stroke goes wrong; the force goes somewhere unplanned. Using the wrong end for the job (claw where the wedge was needed, or the reverse) is an inference from the anatomy, not a sourced beginner-mistake document. Reaching for a hammer to drive an ordinary bar into a seam is a trap too: see Matching.
• Lineage-misuse: using a demolition-class bar for delicate trim work is the failure the thin trim bar exists to fix; manufacturers keep separate product lines for it. Treating a Halligan as a general pry bar misapplies a tool built for door and lock breaching under a specific two-person technique with a flathead axe. No source was found warning contractors against that substitution; the caution is inferred from the Halligan's narrower design intent.

Correct use

• Genuinely good at: demolition, deconstruction for salvage, nail pulling, opening crates and pallets, aligning framing members (alignment-bar variants), and separating stuck or nailed materials.
• Fulcrum technique: a stable fulcrum on sound footing; the closer the fulcrum is to the load, the greater the mechanical advantage; build force gradually, never by jerking.
• Protecting the surface: place a sound wood block, scrap plywood or a wide putty knife between the bar and the surface to spread force. The 1903 Arrington patent describes straddling the claws on the joist as the fulcrum so the board and its fastenings could be saved. Start at an edge or seam and work incrementally along it. Stable, supported loads only.
• Honest gap: "walking a bar" is plausible trade language, but no source using the phrase was found.

✦ Matching

• Does: pries apart, separates, pulls nails, demolishes (heavier forms), lifts and levers, opens crates and pallets, removes trim and molding (light forms).
• Selection fields (add to the matching record): intended material and surface; bar form and tip; length and capacity; clearance available; whether the work must be preserved; whether the exact bar is marked strike-ready; and whether the task involves supported loads, machinery, structural steel, utilities, or demolition hazards.
• Suits: demolition and deconstruction; salvage of reclaimed lumber; flooring and board removal; trim and molding removal (thin trim bar); framing alignment (pinch, connecting or line-up bars); pallet and crate opening. Salvage-oriented patent designs show an interest in board removal, but flooring removal is not a founding use case of the family.
• Routing by form: thin trim or molding bar for finish-sensitive seams · flat double-claw bar for light board and nail work · gooseneck or wrecking bar for heavier demolition · pinch or connecting bar for moving and aligning heavy members · tapered line-up bar for bolt holes · rolling-head or handled mechanic's bar for clearance-limited machinery work · nonmarring polymer trim tool where a steel edge is unacceptable.
• Kit-fit — pairs with: a hammer only with a nail-puller heel or pry bar whose manufacturer explicitly marks the relevant surface as strike-ready. Strike only that designated surface with the specified hammer. Do not hammer an ordinary flat or wrecking bar, its claw, its side, or an unmarked handle. A strike cap does not turn the bar into a hammer or authorise striking any other surface. Also pairs with: a sound wood block or scrap plywood as fulcrum and cushion; a cat's paw for finer nail extraction.
• Kit-fit — substitutes for (and why that is a bad idea): a large flathead screwdriver is a common stand-in but is not heat-treated or shaped for lateral prying loads. This mismatch is reasoned, not sourced to injury data.
• Kit-fit — what it cannot replace: a cat's paw for delicate nail extraction; a Halligan bar's forcible-entry geometry; a jack, crib or block to hold a load.
• Not-for (project-keyed): sustained support of loads; live electrical work unless using an appropriately rated insulated tool and procedure; unknown utilities; brittle or unstable structures; cutting or chiseling as a substitute for the correct tool; striking work with the bar ("not a hammer"); hammering any bar not marked strike-ready; fine trim or finish work with a demolition-class bar.
• Access: "beginner-accessible" is limited to light, stable, nonstructural work with a small flat or trim bar. A long demolition bar or an industrial alignment bar differs sharply in force, recoil, surface risk and worksite context. Moving machinery, aligning structural steel, lifting supported loads and demolition near utilities are not beginner work.
• Revival: deconstruction and salvage culture, and reclaimed-lumber projects, are a real driver for picking one up carefully; the two patents exist because someone cared about getting the board out intact.

Anatomy

• Claw / nail-slot end: a curved or angled slot for gripping nail heads. Stanley describes "offset claw" and "right-angle claw" tip types, with beveled, polished edges for prying, lifting and scraping as well as pulling.
• Flat blade / wedge end: a thin, flat, beveled tip for sliding into a seam. Stanley's own product copy calls the Wonder Bar's ends "polished and beveled cutting edges," and Milwaukee describes induction-hardened claws that stay sharp, per the reviewer [manual, relayed]. Arrington's patent calls the free end wedge-shaped and a "chisel end." These edges are not a bench-chisel edge and are not maintained like one, but they are described by makers as cutting or sharp, and they can scrape, sever fasteners on some specialised designs, and damage finishes.
• Gooseneck vs. straight shaft: a bend can create clearance and a nearer rocking point. It does not by itself raise mechanical advantage. Mechanical advantage is the effort arm divided by the load arm for the actual pivot geometry, and curvature alone does not prove greater leverage.
• Cross-section: flat bars use a wide thin section for sliding under seams; round and hex stock appear on crowbars and pinch bars. Comparisons of hex against round strength need equal dimensions and loading axes, and none are made here. Maker-specific descriptions are kept as product descriptions only (for example Estwing's half-round or I-beam construction, per the reviewer, [manual, relayed]).
• Fulcrum surface: on refined designs an engineered feature: Clements's 1931 patent describes a "curved rocker shoe," not the bar's own edge as an improvised fulcrum.
• Beveled edges: marketed as a feature for cleaner prying and scraping; also the part to inspect for rounding, chipping or mushrooming.

Variations (living)

Match by tip, shaft, length, capacity, clearance and the maker's intended use, not by name.

• Thin trim / molding bar — thin, wide, polished flat blade, smooth faces, no aggressive claw; for finish-sensitive seams. A nonmarring polymer trim tool where even a polished steel edge is unacceptable.
• Flat bar (Wonder Bar-style, double-claw) — flat stock, nail-slot claws at both ends. Light board and nail work, trim, scraping, light demolition.
• Gooseneck / wrecking bar — larger, heavier stock with a pronounced reverse-curve head. Heavier demolition: boards, joists, subfloor. A curved or rocking head offers clearance and a useful fulcrum; reach and weight give leverage.
• Pinch bar — heavy straight bar with a pointed or chisel end for moving and aligning heavy members. May also pry.
• Connecting / line-up / fit-up bar — tapered point for lining up bolt holes in structural steel (for example Klein's round bar, per the reviewer, [manual, relayed]).
• Crowbar (traditional) — round or hex stock, minimal or no claw, the longest and heaviest members (commonly 18 to 36 in.). General heavy leverage.
• Rolling-head / handled mechanic's bar (e.g. Mayhew Dominator) — a rolling head lets the working angle change; aimed at clearance-limited automotive and machinery prying. Beyond "rolling head," the mechanism was not verified against a spec sheet.
• Strike-cap models (maker-specific) — some handled bars carry a purpose-built strike cap with a through-tang (for example Milwaukee's 36-inch 45-74-9236 and Mayhew's Dominator screwdriver pry bar, per the reviewer, [manual, relayed]). The cap is a feature of that model, not of the family.

The Halligan bar is not listed here; see Human side.

Trades

• Carpentry / framing: pinch, connecting and alignment bars for positioning members and lining up bolt holes; flat and trim bars for general trim and light demolition.
• Demolition: gooseneck wrecking bars and crowbars are the core tools of the trade across the general and distributor sources reviewed.
• Flooring and board removal: the 1903 and 1931 patents are documented salvage-oriented designs for lifting boards with less damage (a specialised use, not a founding use of the family).
• Roofing: manufacturer marketing for shingle removal without damaging flashing; marketing copy, not an independent trade standard.
• Moving / rigging: pinch bars for positioning heavy objects, with independent support of any raised load.
• Firefighting (forcible entry): the Halligan bar, a separate cousin; see Human side.
• Salvage / deconstruction: pry bars with cushioning technique to avoid damaging reusable material.

Lineage

• Adjacent context, not direct lineage: the simple lever. The theory of the lever is credited to Archimedes (c. 287–212 BCE). The "give me a place to stand" line is a paraphrase recorded by later writers, not verbatim Archimedes. Pyramid-construction archaeology supports "the lever is ancient and was used in construction," not "the pry bar's ancestor is a documented Egyptian tool." This passage rests on tertiary sources and is kept short for that reason.
• The English name. "Crow" for an iron prying bar is attested from roughly 1400; "crow-bar" as a compound by 1748. The derivation (a forked end like a crow's foot, or Old French cros, "hook") is uncertain, and etymonline presents it as such.
• Cross-link: the ripping chisel. Ripping Chisel names this tool in its Contemporaries section: "Pry bar / wrecking bar — the ripping chisel's later functional successor that abandoned the blade concept entirely, substituting pure lever geometry..." That wording belongs to the other entry. Read the other way, it is a functional-ancestry note for woodworking demolition (Moxon's 1678 fourth chisel for "ripping or forcing off board or plank that are nailed on"), not a claim that pry bars have no edge.
• Family names overlap, forms differ. Trade and retail sources use "crowbar," "pry bar," "wrecking bar" and "pinch bar" loosely, and no period-authoritative source draws a hard functional line. This entry treats the names as overlapping, and matches by geometry. A dedicated connecting, line-up or fit-up bar (tapered point for bolt-hole alignment) is distinct in matching from a pinch bar, which can align, adjust, move and pry; they overlap but are not guaranteed synonyms.
• Descendants and modern variants: the flat bar with nail-slot claws at both ends (the Wonder Bar-style hardware-store form); the gooseneck wrecking bar; indexable or rolling-head bars (e.g. Mayhew's "Dominator" line, confirmed by name via the manufacturer); thin utility, molding and trim bars; handled pry bars with strike caps in some maker lines (model-specific; see How NOT to use it).
• Contemporaries:
  • Cat's paw / nail puller: a distinct lineage for finer nail extraction.
  • The Halligan bar: a separate firefighting cousin (Human side).
  • Come-along (ratchet puller): a ratcheting winch for pulling over distance, not direct-lever prying.

History

• Honest gap, stated up front: no source was found tying Petroski's own The Evolution of Useful Things to a pry-bar case study. The "form follows failure" reading below is this entry's own lens on the evidence, not a Petroski citation.
• Documented salvage-oriented designs (two patents). John Arrington, "Tool," US Patent 742,771, filed August 22, 1903, issued October 27, 1903: a handle with two opposed claws, a flat hammer face and a wedge or chisel handle end, aiming at tearing down and repairing buildings "with the least possible injury to the material." Per the reviewer, the free end is wedge-shaped and later called a "chisel end" used to sever refractory nails [manual, relayed]. Lincoln H. Clements, "Crowbar," US Patent 1,793,060, filed March 14, 1929, issued February 17, 1931: a "curved rocker shoe" that "bear[s] down upon the beam, upon which it rocks when the bar is lifted," plus hook members, for lifting boards off beams without mutilating them. Per the reviewer, Clements himself contrasts his design with an already ordinary crowbar [manual, relayed]. These patents show repeated twentieth-century attempts to make board removal less destructive. They do not establish the origin of the general pry bar or direct descent to today's flat bar. Patent existence shows that an inventor claimed an improvement; it does not show adoption, first use or ancestry.
• Round or hex crowbar to flat bar, a failure-fix inference. A thick round or hex crowbar is too blunt to slide under a flush nail or tight seam without gouging; a thin, wide, beveled flat tip enters the gap. This is an inference from geometry, not a documented history.
• Wonder Bar, a registered brand. "WONDER BAR" is a registered mark (Reg. No. 1,494,846, filed November 23, 1987) covering pry bars. Informal forum and retail use for similar flat bars shows colloquial broadening, not a legal finding about the mark. No Stanley design or utility patent specific to the Wonder Bar's shape was located.
• Unsupported claims excluded. A circulated claim attributing crowbar invention to a named 1904 source could not be traced to any patent or record and is not repeated.

Human side

• The Halligan bar: a separate firefighting cousin, not a variant of the construction bar. The New York City Fire Museum's "Tools and Uniforms" page supports that Chief Hugh Halligan, a firefighter, designed the tool specifically for firefighting (per the reviewer, [manual, relayed]). The following details come from secondary reporting (a Wikipedia entry, FireRescue1 articles and a Firehouse forum thread), not from a museum catalogue record, patent or department history read for this entry, and the sourcing is partly folkloric ("reportedly"): a 1948 design date; blacksmith Peter Clarke as prototype maker, reportedly modelled on a burglar's tool found at a bank fire; the earlier "Kelly tool" (Captain John F. Kelly, FDNY Hook & Ladder 163); the FDNY not buying Halligans until after a patent-expiry dispute; and the Boston Fire Department as first major institutional buyer. Treat them as unconfirmed. A Halligan has a fork at one end and an adze plus pick at the other. FireRescue1 forcible-entry material describes a two-person struck-by risk when firefighters work a Halligan together (a missed swing can strike the holder); it is not a pry-bar hazard in general.
• A real, named, dated Smithsonian catalog record. The National Museum of American History holds a "Nail Pry Bar" (2005.0276.03) used by Jillian Gross, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer, during "America Builds on the National Mall," November 2005, a house-building event that assembled components for 51 homes in one week for the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina; Gross donated her tool belt, including this bar. The reviewer confirms these details [manual, relayed]. It is the strongest named human-use story in this entry.
• Traditions and trades (categories, not named individuals): demolition workers, carpenters, roofers, flooring installers, movers and riggers, stagehands, and automotive and mechanical trades, per manufacturer trade-press coverage.
• Cultures and regions. No distinct non-English-speaking regional tradition was found; a gap, not a finding that none exists.
• Forum sourcing, an access limitation. Two Contractor Talk threads surfaced in search but could not be fetched directly in the original run; exact wording, dates and usernames are unverified, and no quote from them is citable. No Reddit content was retrieved.

Proof of existence

• US Patent 742,771, "Tool," John Arrington, Galista, Kansas, filed 1903-08-22, issued 1903-10-27. Read in full in the original run; the reviewer confirms the dates and details [manual, relayed].
• US Patent 1,793,060, "Crowbar," Lincoln H. Clements, Clements, Minnesota, filed 1929-03-14, issued 1931-02-17. Read in full in the original run; the reviewer confirms the dates and details [manual, relayed].
• Related patents identified but not each read in full: US 1,570,192, US 3,049,337, US 3,893,200, US 1,030,660 (located via Google Patents' similar-documents list).
• Trademark record: "WONDER BAR," Stanley Logistics, L.L.C., Reg. No. 1,494,846, filed 1987-11-23 (Justia trademark database, per the original).
• Smithsonian record: National Museum of American History, "Nail Pry Bar," 2005.0276.03 (Jillian Gross, Habitat for Humanity, November 2005).
• Halligan: the NYC Fire Museum page supports Chief Hugh Halligan as the firefighting designer; other details are secondary reporting (see Human side).
• Deep-time evidence is limited. The lever is ancient; no surviving purpose-built ancient prying or wrecking bar was tied to this tool form. The Roman vectis is documented principally as a surgical bone lever, not a construction tool.
• No other Smithsonian pry-bar-family record was located; a targeted collections search was not run (open item, not a confirmed absence).

The reviewer's corrections (8)

• BLOCKER — 1. Replace the blanket hammer pairing with model-specific striking guidance — Exact claim: “Kit-fit — pairs with: a hammer, to drive the bar’s tip into a tight seam before levering”; “striking (it is not a hammer…)”; and “A pry bar is … not a direct-lever prying tool” framing that never distinguishes struck from nonstruck products.
• BLOCKER — 2. Correct the stored-energy explanation and add the omitted direct safety rules — Exact claim: “Stored energy in a bar that has sprung or bent under a prior load is a real, named hazard … a sprung bar can release that stored energy unpredictably on its next use.”
• SHOULD-FIX — 3. Stop defining the whole family as edgeless and maintenance-free — Exact claim: “with no cutting edge of its own”; “no blade to maintain and nothing to sharpen”; “there is no cutting edge to speak of — the beveled tip is a wedge, not a blade.”
• SHOULD-FIX — 4. Reframe the patents as specialized salvage evidence, not a founding lineage — Exact claim: “flooring removal close to the founding use case of the modern claw-and-fulcrum design”; “both historical patents … were explicitly designed for removing flooring and siding.”
• SHOULD-FIX — 5. Correct the Halligan anatomy and reduce unsupported institutional detail — Exact claim: “a fork/claw-and-adze end and a duckbill/chisel-and-pike end”; and the full 1948/Peter Clarke/patent-expiry/Boston-adoption narrative attributed to “the New York City Fire Museum’s own object records (via a corroborating encyclopedic entry).”
• SHOULD-FIX — 6. Tighten family names and remove unsupported mechanics — Exact claim: “crowbar, pinch bar, gooseneck bar — largely treated as near-synonyms”; “hex bar stock resists … bending/rolling under lateral load better than round stock”; “the gooseneck design … increas[es] effective leverage … without lengthening the tool”; “Pinch bar / alignment bar” as one variation.
• SHOULD-FIX — 7. Do not call informal Wonder Bar usage legal genericization — Exact claim: “has become generic trade shorthand … the same genericization pattern as Kleenex”; “a trademark-genericization story.”
• MINOR — 8. Rebalance matching and confidence around variant-specific selection — Exact claim: “beginner-accessible” for the whole family; MEDIUM-HIGH effective confidence; and a single “Pry Bar (Wrecking Bar)” matching record.
