Nail Set (Nail Punch)

Identity

• Names: nail set (also written nailset) is the U.S. headword; nail punch is common Commonwealth usage (Stanley's own product line uses it). Nail setter can name both this hand tool and various powered or automatic devices, so context matters.
• Family / category: a struck hand tool — a small steel punch driven by a hammer. It sits in the struck-tools family with the center punch, pin punch and cold chisel, but does a different job on a different material (see Lineage). The struck head may be intentionally softer than the shank and tip so it deforms rather than chips; do not treat the whole tool as one uniform hardness.
• One-line: a short steel punch with a cupped or flat working face sized to a finish-nail or headed-brad head, used after the hammer — or a powered nailer — has done the main driving, to sink the head just below a wood surface so the hole can be filled.
• Explicitly NOT: a center punch (sharp point for marking metal before drilling); a pin punch (drives pins out of metal assemblies); a cold chisel (cutting); a pry bar or nail puller (leverage and extraction); a bradawl (starting holes). These are the preserved non-substitutes (see Matching).
• Terms used in this entry: struck head / struck end is the hammer-contact end; working face / tip is the nail-contact end.

How NOT to use it

• Not-for: as a center punch for metal layout (wrong tip geometry and target); as a cold chisel or pry bar (no cutting edge, no lever rating — ASME B107.410 lists those as separate classes); to drive a nail from proud most of the way down.
• Dangerous — the injury model (review fix 1). The tool is mechanically simple but not injury-proof. A conventional nail set is a small struck tool held close to the work:
  • Hand and finger strikes. US 6,564,681, Nail set holder (2003), describes blows to the user's hand or fingers, a nail set flying out when struck incorrectly, and repetitive-use injury. Keep the holding hand clear of the hammer's path; use a holder for repeated or close work.
  • Slip-off. William J. Holstein's US 4,004,624, Carpenter's tool (1977), states the problem plainly: "due to the narrow end of the nail set having a diameter substantially the same as that of the nail, inattention often results in the nail set slipping off the head of the nail during or immediately before the punch is struck by the hammer" (review fix 3). A slip can drive the tip into the work or the hand and can launch the set. Seat fully, align with the shank, tap lightly first.
  • Fragments from a mushroomed struck head. Repeated striking work-hardens and rolls over the struck end; CCOHS explains that such metal can send fragments at velocities high enough to penetrate skin, eyes and light clothing. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.301(c) requires impact tools such as drift pins, wedges and chisels to be kept free of mushroomed heads; it does not name nail sets, and the hazard is carried here by struck-tool analogy. Wear eye protection for hammer-struck and spring-loaded sets alike.
  • Retire damaged tools. Remove from service a set with a mushroomed or cracked struck head, or a chipped, cracked or badly deformed working face (which promotes slip). Do not grind or modify it contrary to the maker's instructions (review fix 9).
  • Spring-loaded sets (review fix 7). Mayhew's safety information: wear ANSI-compliant eye protection; point the tool away from the body while cocking it; never modify the spring or striker; do not use it on materials outside its rating; store it unloaded. A spring set is not simply "safer": it avoids swinging a hammer near the holding hand while introducing a loaded spring mechanism that must be controlled.
• Damaging: over-driving — a Sawmill Creek thread notes that setting too deep leaves a hole so large the putty or spackle cracks and needs two coats; deep overdriving can also split thin trim or compromise the intended fastening. Sink only far enough for the filler and finish system and the fastener's holding requirement. Wrong working-face size: too large mars the wood around the head; too small slips off it.
• Beginner-trap: holding the set square to the surface on an angled nail instead of aligned with the shank (bends the nail, deforms the head, slips and mars the work); skipping the light seating tap; striking too hard; using one set for every fastener, including headless pins.
• Lineage-misuse: treating it as a center punch — documented by ASME's separate classification and the Home Shop Machinist thread. Treating it like a pry bar or chisel is a reasoned inference from the standard's taxonomy, not a sourced incident.

Correct use

• Good at: sinking a finish-nail or headed-brad head just below a wood surface without the hammer face striking the surrounding wood.
• Two stages (Tom Silva): bring the nail nearly flush with the hammer or nailer; then switch to the set.
• Seating and alignment (review fix 2): seat the cup fully on the nail head and align the set with the nail shank, so the blow follows the nail's axis. For a straight face nail this is normally perpendicular to the surface; for an angled nail — thresholds, flooring, toe-nailed trim — follow the nail's angle.
• Controls, every time (review fix 1): wear eye protection; stabilize the work; keep the holding hand and fingers outside the hammer's path; start with a light seating tap to confirm the face has not slipped; then use controlled blows only until the head is deep enough for the intended filler and finish.
• Hammer: a clean, square hammer face of appropriate size, striking the struck head squarely. Do not strike the side of the set.
• Holder: for repeated, awkward or close work, a nail-set holder that keeps fingers off the shank is a legitimate control (US 6,564,681).
• Spring-loaded set: follow the maker's instructions — see the controls under How NOT to use it.

✦ Matching

• Does: sets a finish-nail or headed-brad head just below a wood surface so the hole can be filled.
• Four match paths (the reviewer matching notes):
  • Hand-driven finish nail — hammer to nearly flush, then set.
  • Proud nail after powered nailing — a finish nailer left a head above the surface; the set corrects it.
  • Tight-access, repair and delicate correction — near walls, inside corners, finished surfaces, one-off fixes.
  • Spring-loaded setting — where a swinging hammer is impractical (overhead, one hand holding the work); stored-energy controls apply.
• Sizing rule: match the working face to the nail head — generally equal to or slightly smaller than the head so the set does not bruise the surrounding wood.
• Fastener boundary: for finish nails and brads with a usable head. A generic nail set is not automatically appropriate for a headless pin (e.g. 23-gauge pins).
• Suits: baseboard, casing, crown, picture frames, small casework assembled with finish nails or brads, hardwood-flooring face-nails.
• Pairs with: a claw or finish hammer; a finish nailer (for the correction path); wood filler or putty.
• Substitutes / neighboring systems: a pneumatic or cordless finish nailer is a powered substitute and neighboring production system — it sets most nails as it drives them, but leaves proud nails, repairs and tight spots for the manual set. A spring-loaded nail set is a variant that replaces the hammer-and-set pair in one hand.
• Does NOT substitute for (preserved non-substitutes): center punch (metal layout), pin punch (moving pins), cold chisel (cutting), nail puller or pry bar (extraction, leverage), bradawl (starting holes). The earlier claim that a nail set's smallest tip substitutes for a bradawl is withdrawn: a cupped face is made to capture a nail head, not to cut fibers or make a centered drill dimple, and the cited source could not be recovered (review fix 10).
• Not-for (project-keyed): metal layout; prying; driving a nail most of the way from proud — that is the hammer's job.
• Access: an inexpensive hand tool and mechanically simple, but not injury-proof. A slip can injure the hand, launch the tool, scar or split the work, or shed metal fragments. Beginners should learn it with eye protection, a stable workpiece, a light first tap and a clear holding hand (review fix 1, fix 11).
• Revival: a low-cost addition for any trim, moulding or finish-nail project, and the correction tool that stays useful even in a kit with a finish nailer.

Anatomy

• Struck head: on Stanley's standard line, square so the tool resists rolling off a bench and presents a striking surface. "Square head" describes the struck end; the body may still be round or hexagonal.
• Body/shank: hardened and tempered steel with a knurled grip section (Starrett; already "usual" in Hanley's 1922 patent).
• Working face / tip: cupped (concave) and beveled on the standard form — Starrett: "concave tips to help center them on finishing nails"; flat faces also exist. Matching follows the actual fastener head and the maker's size marking.
• Sizing: Stanley 58-230 (three sizes, color-coded); Starrett 800A (1/32") through 800E (5/32"), also as the S800PC set; Lee Valley's three-piece set uses similar nominal sizes. Larger working face for a larger nail head, smaller for a brad.
• Length: Starrett's 800-series is roughly 4 inches.
• Variants: hollow-shaft self-centering drivers; spring-loaded sets with an internal striker and spring.

Trades

• Finish/trim carpentry — baseboards, casing, crown; also correcting proud nails after powered nailing.
• Wood flooring — face-nailing near walls and edges (Sawmill Creek thread; flooring how-to).
• Cabinetmaking and picture framing — brad-nailed frames and small casework; lighter sourcing (practitioner and retail).
• Scoped gap: no trade-association procedure (NWFA, AWI or equivalent) naming a nail-set specification was found in the sources searched for this entry.

Lineage

• Ancestors, as cited in the patent record. US 4,960,235 ("Nail set device") frames its prior art as including a plunger-type punch/awl (US 356,666, Shattuck) and a tack set (US 462,565, Lewis), and cites a rivet set with a captured spring (US 1,289,526, Nye). The Shattuck and Lewis references are carried as attributed to that later patent's prior-art citations; they were not independently checked (review fix 8).
• Siblings, not descendants — center punch and pin punch. ASME B107.410-2018 (R2023), "Struck Tools," consolidates several older standards, including the former B107.49 for nail sets, and keeps nail sets distinct from the other struck-tool classes. The distinction in the hand: a center punch's sharp point marks metal for a drill bit; a nail set's cupped or flat face seats on a nail head in wood. A Home Shop Machinist forum thread, "Nail set versus center punch," shows the confusion is real among practitioners.
• Variants within the nail-setting lineage: the self-centering hollow-shaft nail driver, which slides over the nail so the striker cannot leave the head; and the spring-loaded ("hammerless") nail set (Mayhew, HIT Tool), which stores energy in a spring and releases it into the nail when the user pulls and releases the mechanism — useful, in This Old House's framing, in tight spots, overhead, or when one hand is supporting the material. Manufacturer force figures are not repeated here: the two makers quote different quantities in different units with no stated test basis, so they are not comparable (review fix 6). The spring tool removes the swinging hammer near the holding hand but introduces a loaded mechanism with its own controls (see How NOT to use it).
• A powered substitute and neighboring fastening system — the pneumatic or cordless finish nailer (review fix 4). A finish nailer does overlapping work by a different mechanism: it combines driving and depth-setting for most nails in production trim and flooring work. It is not a mechanical descendant of the hand nail set. In Don Carlson's 2018 industry history for JLC, he credits Morris Pynoos with a 1944 pneumatic nailer built for the Spruce Goose, and notes that he could not locate photographs of it; this is attributed industry testimony, not independently settled invention priority (review fix 5). Carlson also reports a 1951–52 jobsite pneumatic nailer (Bill Burnison's Nu Matic) and a late-1950s recoil mechanism adapted by Bill Beckman of Spotnails; these are carried as his reporting.
• The manual set did not merely survive where a nailer cannot reach. This Old House's cordless-finish-nailer review explicitly keeps the nail set as the correction tool for proud nails left by a powered nailer. Its other live roles are delicate correction near finished surfaces, repair and one-off hand fastening, and tight access.
• Co-evolution from the fastener side. US 472,913 (1892, William Taylor) is a nail patent, not a nail-set patent; it adds a small cavity in the nail head "to receive the end of a set punch and prevent its slipping." It is evidence the slip-off problem was recognized from the nail side by 1892, not evidence of the nail set's origin.

History

• No founding patent is claimed. Directly verified patents include US 722,559, Screw center-punch and nail-set (filed 1902, patented 1903); US 762,258, Nail set and holder (filed 1902, patented 1904); and US 788,564, Nail-set (Thomas Franklin Thompson, filed 1903, patented 1905). These document early anti-slip and holder/guide variants; they do not establish the first nail set (review fix 8). Later patents in the record include US 1,458,961 (S.T. Williams, 1923), US 1,465,139 (Ralph L. Long, 1923) and US 1,690,987 (Edward F. Malouf, 1928). R.A. Salaman's Dictionary of Tools Used in the Woodworking and Allied Trades (1975) is the likely source for earlier trade usage but was not read for this entry.
• The standard form was familiar by 1922. US 1,409,711 ("Nail set or center punch," Alfred Hanley, 1922) describes nail sets "as now usually constructed" with a tapered, knurled shank, and adds only a grip modification.
• Standardization. ASME lists B107.410-2018 (R2023) — the 2023 reaffirmation, in stabilized maintenance — as the current struck-tools standard; it incorporates the former B107.49 (Nail Sets) along with B107.43, .44, .46, .48, .50, .52 and .59 (review fix 9).

Human side

• Trades where it is still used: finish and trim carpentry, cabinetmaking, wood flooring (face-nailing near walls and edges), moulding and picture-frame work.
• Tom Silva, This Old House general contractor: "If you try to drive [nails] flush, you'll scar the wood. Drive them to head level, then sink them with a nailset." The same piece explains matching the tip to the nail head's small factory-formed depression so the set won't slide off when struck. That two-stage technique is the entry's core practitioner anchor.
• Forum texture. A Fine Homebuilding forum thread, "HAND NAILING – Your technique & tips" (started by toolbear, November 15, 2005), carries dieselpig's cadence for the hammer-and-set workflow: "Tap, swat, set (if necessary)."
• Makers, by current catalog presence. L.S. Starrett sells the 800-series and the S800PC five-piece set; Stanley sells the 58-230 square-head nail punch set and a self-centering version; Lee Valley sells a three-piece set; Mayhew and HIT Tool sell spring-loaded sets. No product-history narrative specific to the nail set was found for any of them in the sources used for this entry.
• Museum record, scoped. No relevant museum record for a woodworking nail set was found in the sources searched for this entry as of 2026-08-12 (review fix 11). One hit, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums' "Nail Punch – Johansson's," is a surgical instrument for orthopedic hip nails — a name collision, excluded.

Proof of existence

• Directly verified early patents: US 722,559 (1903), Screw center-punch and nail-set; US 762,258 (1904), Nail set and holder; US 788,564 (1905), Nail-set, Thomas Franklin Thompson. No earliest origin is claimed (review fix 8).
• Standard form by 1922: US 1,409,711, Alfred Hanley — "as now usually constructed."
• Fastener-side evidence: US 472,913 (1892), William Taylor — a nail with a cavity for a set punch.
• Safety patents: US 4,004,624 (1977), Holstein — the slip-off passage; US 6,564,681 (2003) — hand/finger strikes, flying tool, repetitive use.
• Standard: ASME B107.410-2018 (R2023), incorporating former B107.49 Nail Sets.
• Powered substitute history: Don Carlson, JLC (2018) — attributed industry history, not primary proof of a first pneumatic nailer.
• Scoped negatives (review fix 11): no relevant museum record and no CPSC recall specific to hand nail sets were found in the sources searched for this entry as of 2026-08-12 (the CPSC hits were a children's toy tool set and pneumatic nail guns — different products).
