identity

✦ how NOT to use it

not-for: Not proof of specified torque on any joint, unless it is a controlled-torque system inside its validated process [IW40][IW41]. Not for non-impact-rated accessories.

dangerous:

damaging: over-tightening strips fastener heads and threads and can damage the surrounding part (general reference, Wikipedia via Run 354). A tool-industry blog says impact wrenches used "at maximum settings shreds thread peaks on wheel studs" and that excessive clamping can distort brake rotors by "just 0.005 inches" [IW20]; that figure is not verified against an engineering source, and automotive forums dispute the warped-rotor claim, so it is reported as a live practitioner controversy. The fix is the governing procedure and its verification method, not a generic recipe.

beginner-trap — "if it stops spinning, it's tight enough." A general reference source: "Accurately controlling the output torque of an impact wrench is very difficult, and even an experienced operator will have a hard time making sure a fastener is not under-tightened or over-tightened using an impact wrench." ASSEMBLY Magazine: trigger-judged tightening "could vary by 30 percent to 50 percent" [IW27]. A second trap: reading an assist mode, auto-stop or a "smart" label as torque control. Only a controlled-torque system inside a validated process stands in for verification [IW41].

lineage-misuse: confusing the impact wrench with the impact driver. The common forms differ (square drive for nuts and bolts, 1/4-inch hex for screws [IW2]), with exceptions both ways (7/16-inch hex impact wrenches [manual, relayed] [IW44]; nut-driver bits). Forcing a driver through a hex-to-square adapter breaks adapters [IW34], and a driver may not break loose a truly tight fastener [IW34]. The reverse mistake, full impact-wrench output on a small screw, risks snapping it. A related trap, by inference: a plain drill has no impact mechanism, so forcing it on a seized fastener can stall the motor with the full reaction in the wrist, or strip the fastener or bit (inferred from the mechanism, not a named warning).

correct use

What it's genuinely good at: rapid removal and installation of appropriately sized threaded fasteners, including tight, rusted or seized ones, with far less physical effort than a manual wrench and body-weight leverage [IW1][IW2][IW27]. Removal (break-loose) and installation to a specified condition are different jobs with different controls (see matching).

Before and during use: universal controls

Pneumatic tools, additionally [manual, relayed] [IW38][IW45]: inspect hose and couplings; route the hose so it cannot entangle or trip; set pressure and lubrication exactly as the manual specifies; keep the air shutoff accessible; direct exhaust away from the face and others.

Corded tools, additionally: inspect the cord and plug; keep the cord clear of the work and the socket.

Cordless tools, additionally [IW40]: do not use a damaged or modified battery pack or tool (DeWalt warns these may behave unpredictably and cause fire, explosion or injury); protect battery terminals in transport; charge and store only within the maker's limits.

Tightening to a specification (the procedure-specific rule): follow the exact equipment, fastener, structural or vehicle procedure for tool class, lubrication state, snug condition, sequence, passes, angle and verification. For an ordinary uncontrolled impact wrench, do not use trigger time, sound, mode number or tool setting as proof of specified torque. Use an independent calibrated measurement device where the governing procedure requires it. For many vehicle procedures this means snugging and then finishing with a calibrated Torque Wrench, which ordinary impact-wrench manuals support (DeWalt: "Impact wrenches are not torque wrenches" [IW40]; DeWalt DCF880 directs torque verification with a torque wrench [manual, relayed] [IW39]). But that two-step method is not the only valid process: some joints use turn-of-nut, direct tension indicators, twist-off tension-control bolts, calibrated-wrench procedures, torque-plus-angle, or an application-validated controlled-torque tool. The tightening sequence (a star or cross pattern on many wheels, for example) comes from the procedure for that joint; it is not a universal flange rule.

the workbench holds the deeper fastening-operation guidance; this is the short version.

✦ matching — the workbench's first read

does: loosens and tightens threaded fasteners via repeated rotational impacts [IW1][IW2]; breaks loose rusted, seized or over-torqued fasteners [IW10]; runs repeated fasteners quickly with less arm effort than a manual wrench [IW2][IW27].

two matching operations, kept separate:

suits:

kit-fit:

not-for (project-keyed):

access (tiered):

revival: speed and effort-reduction the moment a project moves outside cabinetmaking into structural or outdoor territory: deck framing, steel bench bases, trailer or equipment maintenance, timber connections, inside the procedures above.

Torque figures, by their own labels. These are different quantities and must not be merged into one "capacity" number: fastening torque, breakaway / nut-busting torque, target installation torque (controlled systems), impacts per minute, and maximum permitted impact-wrench power (set by some fastener systems). They may use different test methods. DeWalt's anchor evaluation documentation warns that published impact-tool torque may not correlate with its permitted impact-wrench-power value [manual, relayed] [IW46]. Model figures above are dated to Run 354 (2026-07-24) and labelled with the metric the source used; they were not re-verified this pass. For one Milwaukee model a retailer and the maker disagree (1,100/1,500 vs. 1,200/1,600 ft-lbs fastening/nut-busting) [IW8][IW9]. Milwaukee's 2966/2967 manual itself gives output figures specific to model, mode, battery and fastening versus breakaway [manual, relayed] [IW43]. Match a tool through both its own manual and the fastener or joint procedure, never through a torque band.
