Chisel Plane

identity

✦ how NOT to use it

The danger class is not empty. It is narrow and direct: an exposed full-width cutting edge, a guiding hand that may sit very close to it, unstable work, excessive blade projection, and the stored state of the cutter. The absence of a located injury anecdote is a search result, not a risk assessment.

correct use

Brief — the workbench holds deep operation. In one sentence: the chisel plane is the last, thinnest flush-trim pass, after a saw or chisel has done the rough work.

✦ matching

The workbench's first read.

anatomy

Three useful corpus subtypes. This is Hewn's functional classification of products sold or documented under overlapping names. It is not an externally recognized taxonomy and not a historical family tree. Each subtype is described by the same fields: cutter source, bed or support, retention, adjustment, sole ahead of and behind the edge.

variations (living)

Prices and availability are dated. First observation: The review, 2026-08-02. Second: this pass, 2026-10-16.

trades (where it appears, with trade-specific notes)

lineage

Three different relationships are kept apart here: historical descent, product conversion, and functional comparison.

history

✦ human side

Practitioner accounts are experience evidence (MEDIUM for technique and preference, forums LOW-to-MEDIUM), carried from the original run and not re-read in this pass.
