anatomy

Makita 7104L — named parts from its manual [CM11]: chain bar; cutter chain; sprocket; chain cover (not to be opened in operation); front and rear vise with vise lever (rear vise set 3–8 mm from the timber before locking); setting handle and indicator plate; stopper pole, stopper and wing bolt (depth stop); lock-off button and trigger; gauge plate and lever (B) for transverse widening; "No. 1"/"No. 2" set positions with lever (C) for stepped lengthening; hook; carbon brushes.

Named-model capacities (direct plunge unless stated):

Makita 7104L [CM11][CM24]Mafell LS 103 Ec [CM22][CM25]
Input10.5 A universal motor2,500 W
Speed3,200 rpm; chain 300 m/minNo-load speed 4,050 rpm (230 V) or 4,400 rpm (120 V)
Max hole depth155 mm (6-1/8 in.)100 mm; 150 mm only with the FG 150 guide support stand
Max hole length (plan)130 mm (5-1/8 in.), steppedper chain set; long slots up to 500 mm only with the separate SG 230/400/500 slot attachments
Workpiece width80–308 mmper manual
Weight~17.3 kg8.7 kg without cable
Supplycorded, single-phasevariant-dependent (230 V / 120 V)

Distinguish a direct plunge mortise from a widened or stepped mortise, from repositioning, from stationary-machine capacity, and from a long slot cut with an SG attachment.

variations (living)

Each variant has its own matching boundary:

Chains. One specialist retailer classifies its offered chains as A/B/C and describes them by aggressiveness and precision; this is not verified as an industry-wide grading standard [CM14]. Compatibility must be checked by machine, guide rail, sprocket, pitch, width and the manufacturer-approved chain set.

Makita "log" note — unresolved. Makita's product page and flyer name log-home building and use "log" in clamp descriptions [CM24][CM16]. The 7104L manual's Additional Safety Rules state: "This tool is for cutting holes in flat-surfaced wood. Never use it for cutting holes in a log." [CM11] Makita marketing names log-home building while the manual includes this prohibition; the sources do not resolve the scope. Follow the operating manual and contact Makita for the intended workpiece geometry. No permission is inferred from marketing.

Market. An active used-equipment market exists [CM19]; prices are not recorded here.

⚠ Safety first — model- and configuration-specific

Safety instructions belong to a specific machine. The Makita 7104L's vise-mounted sequence does not transfer automatically to the Mafell LS 103 Ec's guide-supported operation, or to a stationary shop mortiser, which may add power isolation, point-of-operation guarding, treadle, counterweight and workholding requirements. Read the manual for the exact model.

Direct controls from the Mafell LS 103 Ec operating manual [CM22]:

Chain tension — LS 103 Ec only [CM22]: unplug the tool; wear protective gloves for maintenance; adjust until the chain can be lifted about 6 mm at the middle of the guide rail; retighten the specified fastener; refit the guard. Other models: follow that model's manual; there is no family-wide tension value.

Makita 7104L (its own manual) [CM11]: two-handed operation; ear protection; the manual prohibits gloves while operating; inspect the chain before each use; the chain cover must be closed; re-hook the head in the up position whenever not cutting; the manual states the tool is for flat-surfaced wood (see Makita "log" note below).

US workplace regulation (a separate note). For covered US workplaces and applicable machines, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.213(l)(3) requires the top of the cutting chain and driving mechanism to be enclosed. Other subparagraphs address boring bits, counterweights, universal joints and treadles where present [CM20][CM23]. Consult the rules and authority applicable to the workplace; this entry is not a compliance determination.
