correct use

Loading depends on the saw (review fix 5). With a conventional Western push saw, the cutting stroke presses the work into the fence and the lower cleat into the bench edge. For a pull saw, reverse or positively secure the hook and work as appropriate, or use a design made for pull-stroke loading — do not assume the near-edge cleat alone resists the cutting stroke.

Before cutting.

Cutting. Start the kerf with light, guided strokes [BH32]; Schwarz advances the saw on two lines at once (face and near edge), sawing on the waste side [BH11]. Do not force a dull, binding or wrong-pattern saw [BH30][BH32]. A kerf-guide version changes the pinch/binding geometry — confirm the guide fits the saw plate and is undamaged. Eye protection where chips or broken material can be thrown [BH32].

Chiselling on it. Treat it as a chopping support: secure the work, use an appropriate backing surface, and keep the support hand out of the chisel's path.

Shooting. If the hook's edge geometry is suitable, a plane laid on its side can trim small ends: "A bench hook also can serve as a shooting board for trimming the face grain and end grain of small pieces of work with the help of a handplane" [BH11].
